Two weeks after the infamous Thanksgiving 2009 blowup between Tiger Woods and his then-wife Elin Nordegren, the golfing legend reached out to Hillary Clinton, according to newly obtained emails.
“Tiger Woods wants to speak to her regarding the congo For real,” reads a Dec. 12, 2009, email from the Clinton Foundation’s Doug Band to top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, according to newly released emails obtained by the conservative group Citizens United.
“Honest to betsy,” Abedin writes to Band in response, presumably surprised that Woods, who at that point was the subject of hysterical tabloid coverage, was reaching out to the secretary of state.
“Don’t discuss with hrc until we speak,” Band warns Abedin.
“Uh, hello,” she replies, “U think I’m crazy.”
“The congo” appears to be a reference to the congressional golf course, where Woods holds a frequent charity golf tournament.
It’s not clear from the email exchange if the meeting ever took place.
Woods’ and Nordegren’s marriage soon dissolved after the headline-grabbing domestic incident.
The new emails also show that Clinton was willing to do a photoshoot in 2009 with 20 sponsors of the Clinton Global Initiative, a pet project of her husband, Bill Clinton, as well as a picture with the staff of CGI.
“[W]e are happy to do anything you want for staff,” Abedin said to an organizer of CGI.
Another email, again from Band to Abedin, shows a direct request from the Clinton Foundation boss for the secretary of state to show some “love” to a top donor.
Referencing Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemical, Band tells Abedin in a July 26, 2009, email, “He is at the dinner tues night. Need show him love. … Can you all pull him to say hello to her backstage or greet and have her mention both me and wjc [President William Jefferson Clinton]?”
“Ill have my guys connect with dow guy when they go to walk thru,” Abedin assured Band.
Dow Chemical has given between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation.
The emails also reveal that Clinton had sought to visit Antarctica in 2009, but the trip was canceled.
